Ramanathaswamy Temple stands on Rameswaram island, connected to the mainland by the Pamban Bridge. According to the Ramayana, Rama is believed to have worshipped Shiva here to atone for killing Ravana, and the temple houses a lingam said to have been installed by Rama himself. The temple's corridors (prakarams) are famed as the longest in any Hindu temple in the world, stretching about 1,212 meters and lined with intricately carved pillars on raised platforms. The temple is one of the Char Dham sites revered across India and one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples dedicated to Shiva. Pilgrims traditionally bathe in 22 sacred wells (theerthams) within the temple complex before worship, each believed to have distinct therapeutic properties.
