Nayakan

Nayakan traces the life of Velu Naicker, a Tamil migrant to Bombay who rises from poverty to become a powerful, morally ambiguous underworld don after avenging his father's death at the hands of a corrupt police officer. Loosely inspired by the real-life smuggler Varadarajan Mudaliar and structurally indebted to The Godfather, the film balances operatic melodrama with intimate family tragedy across generations. Kamal Haasan's transformation across decades of the character's life, aided by extensive prosthetics and a towering performance, is considered among the finest in Indian cinema. Ilaiyaraaja's score, cinematographer P. C. Sriram's shadow-drenched visuals, and Mani Ratnam's tight narrative construction combined to produce a film Time magazine included in its list of the 100 greatest films of all time (all-time 100 best films, 2005 list). It remains a touchstone reference for Tamil and Indian crime cinema.
