The Dravidian Movement and Modern Tamil Nadu

திராவிட இயக்கம்

The Dravidian movement, rooted in Periyar's Self-Respect ideology, reshaped Tamil Nadu's politics and social fabric from the mid-20th century onward, giving rise to the DMK and AIADMK parties that have governed the state since 1967.

The Dravidian movement traces its ideological roots to Periyar E. V. Ramasamy's Self-Respect Movement, which challenged caste hierarchy and Brahminical religious authority. In 1949, C. N. Annadurai founded the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), transforming the movement into an electoral political force centered on Tamil linguistic pride, social justice, and anti-caste reform. The DMK's 1967 electoral victory ended Congress dominance in the state and inaugurated an unbroken run of Dravidian-party rule in Tamil Nadu. The movement's cultural wing produced towering figures who moved fluidly between politics, cinema, and letters, most famously M. G. Ramachandran and later M. Karunanidhi and J. Jayalalithaa, reflecting cinema's deep entanglement with Tamil political life. Tamil Nadu today is noted for comparatively strong social development indicators, welfare schemes, and a continuing emphasis on Tamil language and identity in public life.
