Meenakshi Amman Temple
மீனாட்சி அம்மன் கோயில்
One of the largest temple complexes in India, dedicated to the fish-eyed goddess Meenakshi. Famous for its 14 gopurams (gateway towers), including four grand ones over 45–52 meters tall, covered in thousands of vividly painted sculptures.

The formative age of Tamil literature and society, named for the three legendary Sangams (poetic academies) said to have flourished under Pandya patronage, producing the earliest surviving corpus of Tamil poetry.
Vijayanagara Empire and the Nayak Governors

After the Vijayanagara Empire absorbed the Tamil country, its Nayak governors — especially at Madurai and Thanjavur — became independent power centers responsible for major temple expansions, including much of the Meenakshi Temple as it stands today.
